Combining a lifelong fascination of American Indian lore and habits with impressionable childhood memories of growing up in the open spaces of a 4,000-acre cattle ranch, Heinie Hartwig could not resist applying his talents to the ever-changing western landscape.Though most of his past works have lent themselves to the market demands of the highly popular "Western" theme, his current genius rests in landscapes fashioned after such notable 1 9th century artists as Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Hill, Eastman Johnson and George Innes. His "Old World" style of color application- balanced values, light upon dark, creates an aesthetically arresting moody effect.
Heinie describes his style as "atmospheric realism handled in an impressionistic or semi-detailed manner." "While the mind usually remembers a photograph, a more mysterious visual effect can be created by drawing the imagination into a more loose and romantic style."Years of studying the great masters and his own experimentation convinced Heinie that strength, durability and long lasting sharpness of color comes with the use of "Old World" color formulas.
The overall result of his dedication and training are numerous commendations and awards, including the prestigious Triton Museum Competition in 1971. His works are proudly displayed in such venerated institutions as Brigham Young University, Mills College, The Robert Louis Stevenson School, and the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies. Heinie's paintings are collected internationally, and he is listed in most art reference guides including Leonards and Davenports. His paintings have sold at Butterfield's Auction of Los Angeles and San Francisco, and at Phillips Blenstock House Auction in London.
